Remote Learning FAQs for Parents

  • What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

Following the distribution of Chromebooks and the allocation of office 365 email account to all pupils, we are able to provide online learning for pupils  from day 1.

If your child is in EYFS, packs of work will be  provided to all children and SWAYS added to our website, including links to Read Write Inc phonics sessions and voiced over models of your child’s teacher delivering phonics.

Reception pupils have been allocated office 365 e mail accounts so that they can take part in phonics lessons delivered live by their own teachers, via Microsoft Teams.  These are to follow for our new Nursery intake.

  • Following the first few days of immediate education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum remotely as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make the following adaptations:

    • For art and design technology, we have made adaptations to some of the practical parts to make sure that children can complete tasks using what they have at home and the materials we have provided.
    • For science, we have adapted some of the practical work for the same reasons as in art and design technology.
    • For P.E you will be directed to Joe Wicks
    • For MFL you will be directed to Linguascope- Spanish
    • For Music you will be directed to ‘Charanga Yumu – home learning’ and ‘Oak Academy’.
    • For aspects of Computing you will be directed to ‘One Hour Of Code’
  • How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 = 3 hours

    Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 = 3-4 hours

  • Accessing remote education

  • How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

We use Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Teams to support online learning.

Your child has their own Office 365 account for emails (R- Y6) and these are to follow shortly for our new Nursery intake. Your child has been shown how to use a Chromebook and how to access Teams.  An e mail invite will be sent to your child's office 365 account and this will allow your child to join their lessons live from the classroom

For pre-recorded work, we use Microsoft Sway.  Sways can be accessed via the school website.

On the home page of the website you will find 'How To' guides to help you log onto your child's chromebook and to access their office 365 account and Microsoft Teams.

Please call the school office or e mail for password resets or technical support.

You have received information about what we expect during live teaching and this information can also be found on the website. Please ensure that your child follows these expectations

  • Engagement and feedback

  • What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home
    • Your child is expected to complete the work set.
    • Where your child is invited to a live lesson, they are expected to attend and to be on time. Where they do not attend, we will make a phone call to you to ensure that this happens.
    • We expect parents to support their child’s learning, including ensuring that they are available and online for any live teaching.
    • ou will receive information about what we expect during live teaching. Please ensure that your child follows these expectations
  • How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
    • There will be daily live teaching sessions which will allow teachers to check on your how well your child is doing. • We will offer smaller group sessions to support some pupils.
    • Microsoft Forms will be used to monitor who is accessing the SWAY based learning
    • If your child is not online when we expect them to be, we will make a phone call home to check.
    • If your child is not completing and submitting work, your child’s classteacher will call you to discuss this. They will talk to you about how you can help.
    • Your child may be asked to complete work in Microsoft Assignments.  This allows the teacher to provide feedback directly to the pupil.
  • How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
    • We might ask your child to send their work back via email. This might be through their email account or yours. A photograph works well for this, but your child’s teacher will let you know what we need.
    • We will sometimes use online quizzes to check if your child has understood what they have been learning.
    • Your child will have opportunities during live sessions to ask questions either by speaking, typing into the chat function or by putting their hand up electronically and then being responded to by a teacher or TA. You will also receive a phone call at least once a week, during which further feedback can be given and you child will be able to speak to their teacher about their work.
    • SWAYS will include Microsoft Forms on which feedback can be exchanged.
  • Additional support for pupils with particular needs

  • How will you work with me to support my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
    • If your child has special educational needs and/ or disabilities, we will speak to you directly about their support. They will continue to be supported by the adults who work with them in school through live teaching or additional recorded information. This work will match what they would access in school as far as is practicable. There might be some circumstances where this is not possible, but we will speak to you directly about this.
    • For younger children in Nursery and Reception, we will invite them to some live teaching in small groups for phonics and small group work. We will help you to get them online for this. We will also send information about activities you can do at home to support your child. This will include some pre-recorded lessons and stories.
    • Pupils in our Nurture class will have additional SEMH support via Microsoft SWAY
    • Teaching for our ‘New To English’ group will be delivered via Teams and supported by paper based packs of the materials pupils use in school.
  • Remote provision for self-isolating pupils

  • If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

If your child is not in school because they are self-isolating, we will follow the same approach as above. We will contact you to discuss our child’s learning at least once a week.

Thank you for your support at this challenging time. We are immensely proud of the response of our school community to these unique circumstances.
