MFL Curriculum

Intent

At Marlborough Road Academy, we teach French to give pupils the opportunity to communicate in another language and apply this in the real world. We believe language learning builds confidence and supports communication skills.

French provides a strong foundation for understanding how language works. It helps pupils recognise patterns, make links with English and, where relevant, draw on prior knowledge from other languages.

We aim to broaden pupils’ cultural awareness and provide the foundations for further language learning in Key Stage 3.

Implementation

French is taught from Year 3 to Year 6 using the Language Angels scheme. The curriculum is progressive, building skills and knowledge over time across a range of topics.

Lessons are delivered weekly and include opportunities for active participation through speaking, listening, songs and games. Pupils revisit and practise prior learning to support retention and confidence.

Teaching focuses on developing key language skills alongside pronunciation and basic sentence structure.

Impact

The MFL curriculum is engaging and encourages pupils to enjoy learning a new language. Pupils develop confidence in speaking and listening and gain an appreciation of different cultures.

Impact is seen through pupils’ growing ability to communicate, their understanding of language patterns and their increased cultural awareness.
