Intent

At Marlborough Road Academy, we believe that phonics is the foundation of reading and writing. Our aim is to develop confident, fluent readers who enjoy reading and are equipped with the skills they need to succeed across the curriculum.

Through high-quality phonics teaching, pupils learn to:

  • Read accurately and fluently using their phonics knowledge.
  • Recognise common exception words.
  • Develop a strong understanding of what they read.
  • Read with confidence,fluencyand expression.
  • Spell words accurately by identifying and segmenting sounds.
  • Write confidently with increasing accuracy in spelling, grammar and handwriting.

Implementation

At Marlborough Road Academy, phonics is taught daily in EYFS and Key Stage 1 through the Read Write Inc. programme.

Children are taught in groups matched to their stage of learning and follow a clear progression of sounds and letter patterns. As pupils develop their phonics knowledge, they apply their learning through reading and writing activities.

Pupils read books that are carefully matched to their phonics knowledge, helping them to build confidence and fluency. Alongside this, teachers regularly share a wide range of stories, poems and non-fiction texts to develop a love of reading.

Our goal is for every child to become a confident reader and to successfully meet the expected standard in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.

Impact

The impact of our phonics curriculum is seen in pupils' growing confidence, fluencyand enjoyment of reading.

Progress is assessed regularly through daily teaching and ongoing phonics assessments, allowing staff to identify and address any gaps in learning quickly. The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check provides a national measure of pupils' phonics knowledge and helps us ensure that every child is on track to become a successful reader.

By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils are equipped with the phonics skills they need to read, write and learn with confidence.
