Reading Curriculum

Intent

At Marlborough Road Academy, we recognise that reading is fundamental to academic success and lifelong learning. Our aim is to foster a love of reading in all pupils, enabling them to become fluent, confidentand engaged readers.

We expose pupils to a wide range of high-quality texts, including classic and contemporary authors, to develop fluency, staminaand a deep appreciation of language.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced, in line with the EYFS Framework and National Curriculum, so that pupils build knowledge of texts and authors alongside reading fluency and comprehension over time.

We encourage pupils to persevere and develop resilience as readers, understanding that success comes through practise, supportand effective scaffolding.

We promote strong cultural capital by ensuring pupils experience a rich and diverse range of literature, including opportunities to visit libraries, attend the theatre and engage with visiting authors.

Implementation

In EYFS, pupils develop early reading skills through:

  • Listening to and engaging with stories
  • Recognising sounds,blendingand segmenting
  • Discussing texts

Following completion of the RWI programme, whole-class reading is taught daily from Year 2 to Year 6.

During these sessions:

  • Teachers explicitly teach vocabulary and model fluent reading.
  • Metacognitive strategies are used to explain thinking.
  • Choral, echo, paired and independent reading develop fluency.
  • Discussion supports deeper comprehension.
  • National Curriculum objectives are explicitly taught.

Lessons followRosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, with modelling, guided practice and independent application.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils are expected to be fluent readers, enabling them to focus on developing comprehension skills as they progress through the school.

As a result of our reading curriculum, pupils:

  • Read with fluency, accuracyand increasing stamina.
  • Demonstrate a love of reading and engage with a wide range of texts.
  • Use vocabulary effectively to discuss and interpret texts.

Impact is measured through:

  • Statutory assessments at EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
  • Termly PIRA assessments across Years 1–6.
  • Regular RWI assessments and the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.
  • Ongoing formative assessment and pupil voice.

Leaders monitor reading through regular discussions with pupils and staff, and through hearing pupils read, ensuring that attitudes to reading and outcomes remain strong.
